HARMONY DAY

On Wednesday 23 March we celebrated Harmony Day at school. This year the theme was Everyone Belongs.  We celebrated the cultural diversity of Australia. We read stories about people around the world and we looked at how we are the same and how we are different. We looked at websites which showed different houses, schools and bedrooms from all around the world. We realised how lucky we are to be living in Australia.

In Art we focussed on what makes us special or different. We wrote about it on a piece of calico which was then turned into a whole school piece of art called the House of Harmony.
We also got to dress up on Harmony Day. We got to wear traditional costumes from the country we are from or where our family is from. We could also wear something orange because this is the official colour of Harmony Day. We got to take part in the parade at the assembly.

COMPUTERS

Every Friday we get to use the laptop trolley. We have been learning how to use programs such as Microsoft Word, Publisher and PowerPoint. During computer time we have learnt how to; create new documents, insert text and word art, change the size and style of font, insert clip art and how to copy and paste from Google or Kiddle images. We have made cover pages for our Test Books and Italian Scrapbooks, we have typed out one of our Big Writes, and we have started to make a poster about it. We are now working on a PowerPoint presentation about ourselves. We’ve learnt how to do transitions and animations.

MATHEMATICS

We have been having a lot of fun during our maths sessions. We have been doing daily practice in mental maths, times tables, reading analogue clocks, addition and subtraction facts, 2D and 3D shapes and word problems. We have been playing card games to improve the speed and accuracy at which we can add, subtract and multiply.
We have also started using our Prime Maths books. They are so good because we get to work on concepts together in the colourful Course Book and then once we understand we get to work on our own in the Practice Book.
On Wednesdays we focus on word problems. We have been using the bar model to solve addition, subtraction, multiplication and division number stories. We have made so many improvements in using this strategy that the problems get harder and harder every week.

FITNESS

Every morning, from 8.45 until 9.00 we go out for fitness. This term we have had a big focus on games to improve our cooperation and teamwork. We have also been trying to work on our throwing and catching skills by playing a variety of games with tennis balls. Occasionally, when it has been too hot to go outside, we have stayed inside and that is when we do Gonoodle.
Gonoodle is a website that we have signed up with. So far we have completed over 110 minutes of activities. Our favourite activity is Guided Dancing. There are lots of different dances for us to follow which have been created especially for kids. All of the dances really get our hearts pumping and they help with our coordination.
